Zimbabwe seeks ways to leverage its circular economy potential to reduce GHG emissions and raise the ambitions expressed in its NDC. Circular economy interventions should complement the latest NDC with a value chain approach to GHG abatement and support national development objectives.
Zimbabwe is one of the first three countries piloting the practical toolbox for ‘Building Circularity into NDCs’. Viet Nam and Ecuador were the other piloting countries. In the meantime, also South Africa, Brazil, Indonesia, the Philippines and Costa Rica are using the toolbox to inform their NDC update.
The toolbox provides an evidence-based approach to identifying circular economy interventions along product and material value chains which can bring GHG emissions down. It helps identify priority sectors and value chains, select appropriate circular economy interventions, policies and measures and to track progress and report impacts.
The Government of Zimbabwe used stage 1 of the toolbox Toolbox to identify hotspots for material use and GHG emissions. It also explored circular economy opportunities in the selected priority value chains. Shifting Paradigms supported the government with the analysis, stakeholder engagement and evidence-based decision-making.
The initiative included five elements.
- Determine GHG emissions associated with material use in the economy to prioritize sectors/sub-sectors for circular economy interventions in the NDC.
- Assess the current NDC to identify entry points for circular economy interventions.
- Identify relevant stakeholders for consultations.
- Engage stakeholders in the identification of priority sectors and value chains, validate the findings and explore circular economy opportunities.
- Support a consultation meeting at the World Circular Economy Forum (WCEF) in April 2024 in Brussels.
