Wood processing industry can be a large source of renewable biomass, which can be used as a source of energy or raw material. Svilosa in Bulgaria chose to use its waste biomass to meet the energy demand of its saw mill.
Svilosa is a wood processing company which has reduced its carbon emissions by installing a biomass-fired boiler fired. The boiler replaces heat from a nearly coal-fired district heating plant. The emission reductions of this project were developed under Joint Implementation (JI), a crediting mechanism under the Kyoto Protocol.
Shifting Paradigms helped Svilosa make a case to the Gold Standard Foundation that former JI project should be able to gain access to the voluntary market. In addition, it provides quality control to the registration and monitoring process and transferred the project from Joint Implementation certification to the Gold Standard.
